When the lovely and talented Sammie Mills called and said she needed her makeup done for her new head shots, I was thrilled to work with her again.

Sammie has been pursuing modeling and acting for some time, and has become very successful in her career. When we discussed her makeup design for her shoots, she let me know she wanted to look very young, because she typically plays roles for teenage characters. I decided to take inspiration from my actual teenage clients and give her a fresh, healthy and natural glow.

We evened out her skin tone with cream foundation and color correctors, and applied a light shade of mauve blush for that lovely spring flush. We decided to keep her hair simple and straight.

It was wonderful working with Jim Merrill again of JMTFoto.

Above is a fashion spread I was a part of, which is featured in this month's issue of Linger Magazine, available in the New York Market.

This shoot was a lot of fun, and the model, Katrina Chief, is absolutely amazing to watch. These images, captured by Erin L Hubbs, show off some of Katrina's moves - and she definitely has moves!

Knowing we would be shooting mostly black and white images, I created Katrina's makeup to suit that medium, and worked with shadows and highlights for her beautiful skin. Her hairpiece was customized by the amazing Larry Webb, and her beautiful flowing garments were stylized by Kendrick Allen of KK Bloom Boutique.

Megan, my lovely Muse

Master Hair Stylist, and my good friend, Larry Webb of Salon Vivace Southpark, recently teamed up with photographer Michael Church, who I like to call The Master of Light. Larry and I sought to capture some images of clean beauty work for our portfolios, and Megan Scott was the perfect model.

For her makeup, I started with a very understated, almost "no makeup" look - most people would be suprised how much makeup it takes to get that natural look! :) For her second look, I wanted to show a clean commercial type of makeup, so I used a bit of black liner, defined her brows, and stained her lips slightly. For the last look, we wanted to have fun and go big - so I used Sugarpill Cosmetics's black shadow Bulletproof to create a smokey eye.

The rumor is Megan's photo will be featured soon in Modern Salon Magazine to showcase her beautiful short haircut.

She doesn't seem like the type to own a large utility tool box from Lowe's

The dainty, prim and polished Adrian D. Howe may not seem like the type to own a large utility tool box from Lowe's. But this isn't just any ordinary tool box. It's a cosmetic abyss filled with pounds of foundation, blush, eye shadows and lip colors. In the case that ruby, crimson or fire engine aren't the perfect lipstick match, she keeps more than a dozen other shades of red to suit her fancy. But priorities are priorities, and if this makeup artist was forced to take a trip with only one piece of makeup, she proudly claims she would choose "SPF ... and lip balm, as unglamourous as that is." Howe, a super fan of Dita Von Teese, is notorious for her own spin on the pinup look and admits she may have been born in the wrong decade. "I love the era when women were ladies and men were gentleman and when appearances meant something. I adore the classic ladylike look." But, no matter the look Howe can transform blah to beautiful, whether she's hired for a wedding, special event, print work or a runway show. A self-proclaimed workaholic, Howe, who sometimes books her weekends 10 months out, would "rather work than sleep."

Creative Loafing: You do makeup for a living, but what is your personal makeup regimen?
Adrian Howe: For myself, I go fairly simple on the eyes. A little black flipped out eyeliner and red lips. But I always tailor my makeup to the place I'm going and who I'm going with.

What's the reason behind using cruelty-free products?
I'm a vegetarian and a total animal lover. I have four dwarf bunnies that hop around the house and use a litter box. They're my babies and my inspiration.

What is your biggest makeup pet peeve?
Foundation that doesn't match ... you cannot fake a tan by going darker with your foundation. The floating head line ... I can't stand it!

What has been your most rewarding experience as a makeup artist?
This is going to sound really corny, but every client that sits in my chair is the most important client I have. Whoever is sitting in my chair is my VIP and who I give all of my attention to.

If you could give one piece of advice for all women about applying makeup, what would it be?
Be classic. Keep up with the trends but don't necessarily apply them; pick your style and be faithful to it.

How would you suggest that others interested in the trade get started?
The best way is to contact other artists and ask to assist them. Also, look for a retail job working at any counter you can. You've got to want it. It's not easy, but it is so rewarding. It's a profession where you never get bored. Every face you look at is different. That is something I love about this profession.

The many faces of Courtney

As you can see, Ms. Courtney Petersen has a lot of different looks. I was fortunate enough to meet her at a photo shoot for SouthPark Magazine, in which she was the cover. We kept in touch and decided to do a photo shoot with some of my favorite people, Larry Webb and Erin L Hubbs.

Not only is Courtney sharp as a tack (she's finishing up her Doctorate as we speak!), as we were working together, I realized that Courtney is a true chameleon, and can really change looks with different makeup designs. We had a lot of fun bringing out several different styles with hair, makeup, and wardrobe changes, and Courtney wore them all fantastically. Larry Webb really knocked it out of the park with all his hair designs for the shoot, and Erin caught her in all the right angles.

Ms. Anna Wolf is just beautiful. I've had the pleasure of working with Anna several times now, and I always enjoy it - perfect skin, gorgeous full brows, and the cutest cupid's bow you've ever seen!

These images were taken by Michael Church and used in the Fall issue of Charlotte Style Magazine. The clothes were styled by Nicole Sinclair and Bridgette West, and feature fashions from top designers, including Calvin Klein.

For her makeup, Anna has full beautiful brows and lashes, so I didn't feel the need to do too much to her eyes - simple shadow in earth tones and slate gray liner with lots of mascara was all she needed. I gave her a flushed mauve pink cheek and changed her lip color in various shades of pink and bronze to suit her hairstyle and fashion changes.

Thank you to Michael Church, Anna, Deb, Nicole, Bridgette, and Larry for all your hard work on this shoot - it was definitely a success!

Charlotte Style: There's Something About Niki

There is definitely something about Niki Kapoor...
I was fortunate enough to get to know Niki during this photo shoot for Charlotte Style. Niki is the owner and designer of Nika Formals, and her gowns are absolutely stunning. She is an interntional designer and she has dressed some of the top and most glamourous celebrities around.

But that's not the only thing about her. Niki is one of the most humble and good natured people you will ever come to know. She has an air about her that puts you at ease, and lets you know she is trustworthy. She is an animal rights activist (definitely something we have in common) and a human rights activist.

Niki is not content owning her own wildly successful business and making the most gorgeous gowns you've ever seen. She understands the impact of giving back. Inspired by her own humble beginnings, she's started an orphanage for girls in India which will allow them education, shelter, food, and clothing - and opportunities they would never have had otherwise. Her story and cause definitely will tug on your heart strings, and I encourage everyone to research it to learn more.

At this photo shoot, I also got to know Niki's mother. She has just as good a heart as her daughter, and I loved seeing the special look in her eyes when she looked at her daughter - very heartwarming. For their makeup designs, I kept their skin fresh and natural using a cream foundation lightly buffed into the skin, and shades of gold and brown on their eyes. I accentuated Niki's beautiful exotic almond eyes with individual lashes. Both ladies' hair was styled by Larry Webb for Salon Vivace Southpark.

An Evening to Remember - Nika Gowns with Olivia Pires

This spread for Charlotte Style Magazine's Fall 2011 issue is aptly named. This shoot took place in a private estate in south Charlotte. The exquisite gowns are provided by Nika Formals - and if you think they look pretty in pictures, you must see them in person. Accessories were provided by KK Bloom and Made by Custom.

The beautiful Olivia Pires was the perfect model for this shoot. She wore these gowns with grace and elegance, but still looked young and happy. Larry Webb created a new hair style to compliment each gown, and I changed her makeup design as well to compliment the colors and styles of her dresses.

For her makeup, I went with a subtle smokey effect using gold, brown, and a soft black on her eyes. Black gel liner on the top and lots of individual lashes created a focus to her eyes. I wanted her skin to look flawless and natural, so I opted for a cream foundation buffed lightly into her skin to give a soft dewy appearance. I changed her lip color to suit each of her gowns, and ranged the colors from soft pinks to coral, bronze, and cranberry red.

Original: The Importance of Talented Makeup Artists and Hair Stylists For Post Production

What role do makeup artists and hair stylists come in for the benefit of the retoucher? Or to be more specific, how important are talented makeup artists and hair stylists to have on set over an amateur? To carry on forward, I will label them in one term, ‘artists’, for the sake of brevity.

Artists are the glue that holds the shoot together. They are essential to every shoot that transpires, from inception of an idea to the published print. Most of the photographer’s ideas are based around what makeup and hair the model will showcase, especially if it’s beauty. Now, the question isn’t if they are important, but how important they are, and how important are great ones in relation to mediocre ones. Are they worth the added costs?

In short, yes, and allow me to explain.

What makes it hard for the talented artists, especially the makeup artists, is that they are usually undercut by people proclaiming to be good at makeup, because they know how to apply it to themselves. Just because you apply makeup to your own face, doesn’t make you a talented artist, let’s get that out of the way! Same goes for hair. Secondly, most people can start working without the need to go to school for it. So that leaves us flooded with a mix of amateurs and professionals in a market where everything seems up for grabs these days.

The Trickle Down Effect

What this now boils down to is the affect it has on you and your team.

Let’s say you’re doing a shoot where the artists become necessary. The question becomes, is it worth spending the additional money on talented and reputable artists for your shoot (hair and makeup) over beginners who may do it for TFP?

The answer is YES.

From personal experience, clients approach me and ask me for a quote on a job. Upon looking at the files, one of the worst things I find are that they cheaped out on makeup and hair, and they came to me because they didn’t have the ability to fix tremendous flaws the artists should have spotted on set. Peeling eyelashes, bleeding lip lines, uneven lip lines, improper blending of the eyeshadow, terribly clumped eyelashes, overfilled in eyebrows, face tone not matching neck and body tones due to bad makeup, uneven eyeliner, and the list goes on forever. Let’s not even talk about avant-garde looks. Did I mention that hair is the most expensive thing to fix due to the sheer time invested in digital combing out each strand of hair, one by one? Yes, it’s that brutal.

And in the end, after all that time and money spent in fixing these issues, you’re back to where you would have started out with it you hired someone who got it right in the first place. In effect, you may even scrap some really fantastic shots that the model gave you because it wasn’t fixable. You’ve now wasted your own time, and cost (depreciation, cost of time, space, etc).

With cameras these days, every flaw will not only be seen, but magnified and showcased. And most of the time and money goes into fixing these flaws just to get back to where you started! So the cost incurred by the team becomes 10 fold of what it would cost to have hired great artists.

In Conclusion

So yes, spend the extra money, the results will speak for itself, and they are truly worth the cost, it pays off for itself in post production if you have to do it yourself, or hand it off to your retoucher, he or she will love you for it! I know I do.

Instead of saving $300+ by going TFP, you will save a lot more in time, energy, and money afterwards. And not only will it pay off for itself, you will profit from it. Your portfolio will look fantastic which adds further to interested clients and opens up doors to better talent you can now work with. No one wants to work with someone who doesn’t have a strong team together, it makes everyone look bad.

I can’t vouch how much I appreciate talented makeup and hair artists as a retoucher, I always take note of their work. I have a list of 10 that I can think of right off the top of my head, but I do not want to start naming them in fear of leaving a couple behind. So if you’re reading this, give yourself a pat on the back, the industry recognizes your talents and appreciates it more than you know.

Fashion's Night Out Charlotte 2011 at the Metropolitan was just such a great show, I had to post twice. The above photos were taken by Jamar Caldwell for Charlotte Style Magazine and also by Chewee Good.

It was a packed house, as you can see. I'm just so proud of my models in the gorgeous dresses from KK Bloom! And the always stunning Natalie Pasquarella hosted the event - I loved seeing her in her beautful dress!

Fashions Night Out Charlotte 2011 with KK Bloom

Fashion's Night Out Charlotte was at the Metropolitan Thursday September 8, 2011. I partnered with KK Bloom Boutique and Salon Vivace for this incredible fashion show. The show was put on by Pascal Promotions and Effie Loukas, and showcased 26 boutiques, salons and makeup artists.

Kendrick Allen Slaughter from KK Bloom showed her most glamourous fashions for the event, ranging from a full length beaded gown to fun to flirty cocktail dresses, including a black feather dress dripping in jewels. Her accessories sparkled on the white runway and really made the outfits shine.

Hair was styled by Larry Webb of Salon Vivace Southpark. Larry coordinated all the girls' styles to showcase texture in the hair, and created beautiful styles that kept the girls looking elegant, but still young and sexy.

I created the makeup design based on the fall trends, making them my own for the runway. I used metallics in gold and copper on the eyes, a contoured cheekbone, very defined brows, and a deep red lip. All the models loved their makeup, and airbrush foundation kept them looking fresh all night.

I was so thrilled when I got the opportunity to work with SouthPark magazine's September fashion issue! The wardrobe, shoes (OMG!), accessories...so incredible! The photographer, Jason Miczek was a lot of fun to work with, and the Harvey Gantt Center was the perfect location. Hair was styled by my friend and fellow artist, Danielle Maddox.

The fashion focused on bold colors and prints, so Danielle and I decided to let the fashion be the main focus. We pulled in some key elements of fall hair and makeup trends - metallic earth tones on the eye (gold and copper) and beautiful soft waves and braids in their hair.

The September fashion issue is on stands at the Charlotte Observer and several locations around Charlotte. Thank you to everyone for making this shoot such a success!

Fashion's Night Out Charlotte 2011

I'll be working with my friend Kendrick Allen Slaughter of KK Bloom Boutique (yep, you've heard me talk about the beautiful Mrs. Kendrick before), and of course, the ever so talented hairstylist, Larry Webb of Salon Vivace Southpark. We'll have some gorgeous models, and though I can't give out our secret plan for hair and makeup yet, I can tell you they will look very classy and elegant. Beautiful Bride: Danielle

Danielle was married June 25 in Belmont, NC. I worked with Danielle and her mother Teresa throughout the planning process to come up with a makeup look Danielle would love. Danielle is simply gorgeous with perfect skin and features - the makeup was just an accent to an already beautiful woman! She looked stunning in her gown, and kept her look fun with a pair of custom-made converse sneakers - how cute!

Danielle and her fiance had been dating for over 10 years, and they were so excited this day had finally come for them. Their wedding was a formal and elegant affair, with colors of black and ivory, with accents of yellow. For her makeup, Danielle chose an earthy smokey eye, with shades of gold, brown, and soft black, with long lush lashes, paired with a neutral lip. Her bridesmaids recieved a more understated look with shades of charcoal and bronze, also paired with a neutral glossy lip. Airbrush foundation kept them all looking fresh and elegant all day.

Thank you to Danielle and Teresa for having me be part of this special day. I had a lot of fun getting everyone ready, and I know Danielle's new life will be blessed with happiness!

Megan Scott in KK Bloom Fashions!

Megan Scott is a classic beauty in Black and White. I was so lucky to have been able to work with her - Megan left two days later for her big break in New York, and she's doing very well.
This photo shoot took place at Erin L Hubbs's studio, and her wardrobe was supplied by Kendrick Allen Slaughter of KK Bloom Boutique (yes, the same Kendrick whose beautiful wedding you just read about). Her fashions and incredible jewelry looked so great on Megan, and Larry Webb made a masterpiece of her hair.

For most shots, I did a lightly smokey eye in shades of brown or charcoal, and used black mascara to bring out her already long lashes. A neutral lip was enhanced with lipstick and just a little gloss, so Megan wouldn't be too overdone. Knowing the photos would be in black and white, I chose mostly matte colors to work with, and gave Megan's already perfect bone structure a little more definition with countour and highlight.

During the course of the shoot we discovered Megan has the most incredible smile, and we loved seeing it! Thank you to Megan, Erin, Kendrick and Larry - this photo shoot was epic!

All American Family: The Chapmans

I've worked with Lisa Chapman a number of times...in fact, I'd venture to say my hands and makeup brushes are well acquainted with her beautiful face. Cocktail parties, engagement photos, her beautiful wedding to Richard last year, and now her Maternity photos. I'm very humbled to have been her makeup artist for the most important events in her life, and she even mentioned to me "I've never had photos taken of me without you doing my makeup!". Well that was all I needed to hear - I insisted on being a part of this experience for her.

Richard and Lisa are about to welcome baby girl Guliana into their family, along with kitty Molly and puppy Charlie, so they will have a full house (which they just finished remodeling). Lisa made a wise decision to have maternity photos taken so she'd remember just how cute she is with a pregnant belly. And Baby Guliana even did a little dance for me while I had my hand on Lisa's stomach - it was so wonderful!

For Lisa's makeup, we used a salmon color corrector and skintone concealer before applying airbrush foundation, which gave her skin a beautiful healthy glow. Her eyes were done with a shimmering brown pigment and black liner, and accentuated with lots of individual lashes. Neutral lipstick and gloss complimented her perfectly.

Beautiful Bride: Kendrick's Wedding

Mrs. Kendrick Allen Slaughter was married June 4 at The Duke Mansion in Charlotte. I've worked with Kendrick before through her boutique, KK Bloom, and I was honored to be part of her special day.

Kendrick chose the cutest bridesmaids dresses from her boutique, and everything was decorated in her favorite color - pink! Her extrodinary cake was made by her mother, Kathy Allen, of Kathy Allen Cakes. It was absolutely stunning and also delicious!

It was a hot 92 degrees on Kendrick's wedding day, but her makeup stayed fresh and beautiful all day. Kendrick chose a dramatic look for her bridal makeup, including smokey eyes, black liner, and a lovely soft pink lip. Her bridesmaids complimented her with a soft smokey eye in shades of charcoal and pink champagne, and glossy lips.

My first act as Associate Beauty Editor for Charlotte Style included some exclusive behind the scenes interviews with the local designers showcased in the Style Around the World Fashion Show on June 16 at the Metropolitan. Local designers created designs based on a flavor of Vitamin Water, but as well all know, the look isn't complete without the perfect hair style and makeup application. I was able to ask the designers about their hair and makeup concepts for the show.

Well, as you can see, Olivia is simply stunning. I was honored to work with her at a photo shoot along with Erin L Hubbs and Larry Webb.

Olivia gorgeous skin and bone structure, so I kept her makeup understated and natural. I used shimmery shadows on her eyes, mascara, and a coral rose lip to bring out her features. Larry Webb created several masterpieces in her hairstyles, and she looked beautiful in front of the camera.

Anna Wolf

I recently participated in a photo shoot with the absolutely stunning model, Anna Wolf, along with photographer Erin L Hubbs and hairstylist Larry Webb.

Anna is completely stunning without a lot of makeup on, so I decided to keep her look simple, as have her beautiful skin and features speak for themselves. Her makeup look consisted of airbrush foundation, shimmery champagne and soft charcoal eye shadow, and rosy lips. Anna has the most amazing lashes, so I did just a few coats of mascara to bring them out.

Larry really outdid himself with her hair. The blue hydrangeas were the perfect accent.

Beautiful Bride: Amy Ellis

Amy Ellis was married May 21st at St. Gabriel's in Charlotte. She was a natural beauty, and I loved working with her.

Amy and her attendants gathered at Salon Vivace in Southpark to get ready for the day. The incredibly talented Larry Webb made everyone's hair look gorgeous, and the girls got to relax together in Larry's private salon room.

Amy's style is more understated and classic, so we kept her makeup very natural, with shades of pink champagne and soft brown on her eyes, and a light pink lipstick. Her attendants all chose their own look, which ranged from soft neutral colors to navy smokey eyes. Airbrush Foundation kept them all looking fresh throughout the day.

Boy am I one lucky Makeup Artist...

Ms. Kendrick Allen owns KK Bloom Boutique on Selwyn Avenue in Charlotte - if you haven't been there yet, it's a must see! I met her when I did a photo shoot for her boutique fashions, and she is so beautiful and SO SO sweet, and we became fast friends. I was so excited when she got engaged to the man of her dreams, and I got to be her makeup artist.

Kendrick's Bridals were taken at the Duke Mansion by Erin L Hubbs of Greendoor Imaging. Her hair was styled by the talented Larry Webb of Salon Vivace, and I did her makeup - and I sure had fun with it! Not only does Kendrick have perfect skin and features, but she really let me have some fun with her makeup - smokey eyes with shades of brown and gold, thick black liner, long long lashes, and soft pink lips. I love a dramatic bride!

Catwalk for a Cause: Martin Truex, Jr. Foundation

I've worked with Sherry, owner of Lavendar Boutique in Mooresville, several times now, and she is just incredibly sweet and wonderful (not to mention stunningly beautiful!). I was honored she asked me to participate in her Catwalk for a Cause Fashion Show in May, which benefited the Martin Truex, Jr. Foundation.

This runway event took place in Nascar driver's Martin Truex, Jr.'s race shop - and it was completely transformed to a beautiful event space. The fashion show raised over $25,000 to benefit the Levine Children's Hospital. Local women were the models in the show, showcasing fashions from Lavendar. But the stars of the show were the kids - these amazing children show how to handle anything in life with happiness and grace.

I had a wonderful time getting everyone ready, along with Larry Webb from Salon Vivace, and stylists from Modern Salon and Salon Utopia. Erin L Hubbs was one of the photographers taking photos of the event.

Fashion Soul

I was asked by the famous Charlottean, Joey Hewell, to participate in his fashion show in May, called Fashion Soul. I was paired with Luis Machicao, who makes the most fabulous vintage-inspired designs. We agreed on a 50's style makeup, with black eye liner, lots of lashes, and of course, the signature red lips.

I was assisted by Larry Webb of Salon Vivace Southpark, who did an amazing job helping me with the makeup. Thank goodness Larry was there for me, because we had 11 models in the show! Boy was I tired once we were done, but the girls looked great. Their hair was styled by Bradley Sanders and his team at Groove Salon in Charlotte.

The runway was set up outside Dharma Lounge in Southend, and featured several local designers, models, hair stylists, and makeup artists.

Beautiful Bride: Ashley Griffith

Ashley Griffith was married May 28, 2011 in Davidson, NC. I have been fortunate to work with incredibly beautiful brides, both inside and outside, and Ashley was no exception.

Ashley is so beautiful already, so we kept her makeup very natural, with shades of champagne and brown on her eyes, accented with individual lashes. This was paired with pink blush and pink lips, and of course, airbrush foundation. Her bridesmaids also wore a natural look, with shades of gold, brown and charcoal on their eyes, paired with a neutral glossy lip.

Everyone got ready at the Davidson Village Inn, and The Light Studio Salon styled everyone's hair in beautiful styles, which held all day.

Her gown was from Classic Bride and Formals, located on Main Street in Davidson. Ashley's wedding was planned by the incredible staff at Style Perfect Weddings and Events.

Jordan Elliott was married April 30, 2011 at The Pointe country club in Mooresville, NC. She is so sweet and beautiful, and I had so much fun working with her for her wedding.
Jordan chose a earthy smokey eye for her makeup look, paired with a pink lip and flushed cheeks. The airbrush foundation made her skin appear flawless, and she loved her false lashes, which really brought out her eyes. I also did her mother's makeup in a similar style, but slightly more understated. Jordan's hair was styled by Modern Salon & Spa in Huntersville.

Oscar de la Renta at the Mint Museum!

I am still amazed and completely honored to have been chosen as one of the makeup artists for the Oscar de la Renta fashion show, which took place April 29th at the Mint Museum in uptown Charlotte. The head makeup artist was the incredibly talented Jami Sway, and the hair styles were created by Follicle Salon. The show was extremely well coordinated, and the models were beyond beautiful. And the fashion...there are no words! So here are some photos from backstage I snapped with my phone!

Oscar de la Renta Fashion Show

This may very well be one of the biggest events in my career! I will be part of the makeup team, headed by the amazingly talented Jami Sway, at the Oscar de la Renta fashion show in Charlotte! Oscar will be showcasing his Fall 2011 collection to benefit the Mint Museum in uptown on April 29, 2011. These fashions were just debuted for New York Fashion week, and they will now be shown to the Charlotte community.

This weekend, the makeup team gathered to perform our run-through of the makeup look we'll be executing at the show. Above are some photos of my model, Mechelle.

The look is very sophisticated and wearable. It features a simple chocolate brown eye, with flushed berry colored cheeks and lips. The skin is natural and almost bare, using foundation and concealer only where needed.

I am so honored and humbled to be part of this team for Oscar de la Renta's show.

I was honored to work with Charlotte Style Magazine for the third time! The Spring 2011 issue featured the top 25 Most Stylish People in Charlotte, with the top 5 on the cover. The 2011 Top 5 Most Stylish include Sandy Bowers (owner of Monkee’s Of Lake Norman), Jami Svay (Celebrity Make-Up Artist and creator of Tastee Cosmetics), Nicole Sinclair (Chief Creative Officer for Style Sanctum), Brittney Cason (Columnist, TV Host and Philanthropist) and Ron Freeman, Jr. (Managing Partner of Dry Creek Holdings, LLC and Bespoke Media).

The Cover Reveal party took place at Mercedes Benz of South Charlotte, and featured a runway show of local boutiques. The cover was on display the following day at Tiffany's, where the subject enjoyed an authentic Breakfast at Tiffany's.

I had a great time at the cover shoot working with the amazing team: Erin L Hubbs, Fine Art Photographer, and Larry Webb, Hairstylist for Salon Vivace Southpark.

I worked with the beautiful and infinitely talented model Sammie Mills once before, and I was honored she asked me to join her for this photo shoot with amazing fashion photographer Jim Merrill, of JMT. These photos were taken at Jim's studio in North Davidson.

Sammie is looking to branch out and do some more sophisticated and edgy shoots, and I was happy to help glam her up! She is so much fun to work with, and really is a site to be seen!

In My Kit: My New Zuca Makeup Cases!

My wonderful and supportive husband suprised me on my birthday the other week! OK, so I wasn't all that suprised...a man does need a little help when a woman is hoping for something very specific. But I am so excited for my new Zuca Artist Sport and Zuca Artist Backpack cases!

Zuca is a luggage company that became very popular with beauty stylists because of their great designs, so they've come out with a line of cases designed specifically for artists. I chose to go with the Zuca Sport Artist, which contains 4 inside pouches and several zip pockets. It has double wheels that make it easier to climb stairs (which is a back saver when my client lives on the 3rd floor!). The Zuca Backpack is designed for hairstylists, and even has a spot for a blow dryer - but I use it mainly for more makeup supplies.

I'm often asked what makeup I use...well, pictures are better than words, right? Well, maybe we'll have both :)

Here are the cases all packed and also shown open:

The Backpack fits nicely on the top of the rolling Artist case. I've re-arranged some things since I took these photos, but wanted to show you what I carry inside on a regular basis.

These are the products I typically take with me on any given makeup job.

Below is the Backpack unpacked:

The backpack comes with 2 small pouches, that hold a lot of supplies! I carry my studio light and extention cord in one pouch, and Airbrush compressor, gun, battery, cord, and depotter in the other pouch. On the top of the pouches, I store my airbrush makeup in a plastic box and some extra extention cords and a surge protector. In the zip pockets on the door of the backpack, I hold my airbrush cleaning supplies, nail polish, and hair pins. On both of the outsize zipper pockets, I hold some basic hair supplies - flat iron, hairspray, bobby pins and elastics. I can definitely fit more into the pouches than I have currently, but I didn't want to risk damaging my light.

Let's move onto the big case! Here's the rolling Sport Artist unpacked, still in the 4 pouches:

I have basic sanitary supplies stored in the velcro compartments on the inside door (shown to the left side of the photo). These include a stainless steel palette and scraper, mascara and lip wands, facial wipes, sponges, and tissues. On the outside zipper compartment, I store busiess supplies such as notepads, a calculator, and pens. I keep my brush apron on the mesh compartment on the other side. Each pouch is dedicated to a particular part of the face: skincare, face and blush products, eyes, and lips.

Face Products:

Here I've shown most of my foundation and face products, including primers (Nature's Own, Nurturing Force, Smashbox, Urban Decay), concealers (Graftobian color corrector palette, Temptu Concealing Wheel, Paula Dorf, Keromask and Amazing Cosmetics concealers), Foundations (RCMA Shinto and KO palettes, Graftobian Warm, Neutral and Cool palettes), Blush (La Femme 12 color palette) Nurturing Force blotting papers, and Foundation Setting Spray. My brushes are shown in this photo, but as I mentioned above, they are kept in the side mesh pocket.

Lip and Skincare pouches:

Here are shown both my lip and skincare pouches, unpacked. I keep most of my skincare products in the black and clear mesh bag (makeup removers, moisturizers, more setting sprays) as well as more hygenic and medical supplies, such as q-tips, neosporin, and benedryl strips. I also keep hand towels in this pouch, along with a few touchup kits (shown in the ivory bags).

My Lips pouch contains 2 tackle boxes that I use for lipsticks - I've taken them out of the tubes and put them in here for easy transport. I have the names and brands of the lipsticks written on the bottom (MAC, Smashbox, Urban Decay, as well as many random lipsticks I've picked up all over the place). I also have my 2 Smashbox Lip Service palettes and 2 Graftobian lipstick palettes, along with a small plastic box of lip glosses (Urban Decay, MAC, Smashbox, NYC, NYX) and lip pencils (NYX, among other brands). I keep my OCC Lip Tars in a small plastic bag in this pouch as well.

The Eyes:

I tried to get all these products into one picture, but wasn't able to. I have all my eye shadows in this pouch, along with 2 cosmetic bags - one holds my brow and liner pencils and products (Urban Decay, MAC, Smashbox, Revlon, Sonia Kashuk, NYX, among others) and the other bag holds my eyeshadow pencils and single pan shadows (MAC and NYX mostly). Seperately, I have my gel liners (MAC black and brown, CRC black) and mascaras (black waterproof and clear) along with my eyeshadow palettes (2 La Femme 12 color palettes, 1 MAC 15 color palette, 2 Yaby 40 color palettes, 1 NYX 10 color palette). My Makeup Forever Flash palette is kept with the eye products as well.

I keep my lashes in a plastic box on top of the 4 pouches:

They were shown off to the side in the top picture, but like I said, I move things around a lot!

My kit is always evolving and growing - I've actually added an additional eye palette (Yaby palette) since this photo was taken. With the Zuca cases, I'm not at a loss of where to keep it all!

Cat Felicity at Salon Vivace

As you can see, Cat is just gorgeous. These photos were taken by Erin L Hubbs at Salon Vivace Southpark. Larry Webb provided the incredible hair styles, and I did Cat's makeup to go with her beautiful sequined top. We had all worked with Cat before at Charlotte's Fashion's Night Out, and she did not fail to shine then either!

Erin, Larry, Cat and I all had so much fun at this photo shoot, we didn't leave until 4am! Yes 4am! These photos were taken around 2:30! It's just a testament to how gorgeous and energetic Cat is, even in the late hours.

I am honored to be part of "Hitched" Bridal Magazine, available now in Lake Norman! I wrote tips and suggestions for the beautiful bride, to make sure her makeup is appropriate for the most important day of her life.

Bridal Makeup Application is very misunderstood. Many people think it's just making the bride look pretty, or creating a slightly more dramatic look than her everyday makeup. However, Bridal Makeup involves expertise from every aspect of the makeup and beauty industry.

As a Bride, your face will be immortalized in photos and video for the rest of your life. Not only do you need to look absolutely stunning in person on your Wedding Day, but Brides need to bear in mind that your face will be photographed from all angles. You will be photographed in color, black and white, sepia, or any combination of these techniques. You may be photographed indoors with florescent light, outdoors in natural light (at all hours of the day and evening), candlelight, and also with any special lighting effects you'll have at your event (those beautiful pink lights in your reception hall?). You will also be on video - standard, HD, or both. Take all this into consideration, as well as the fact that your wedding day will last a full 12+ hours, and that you will feel a range of emotions this day - happy, crying, and all of the above! Your makeup needs to stand up to all of these situations!

It's best for a Bride to consider hiring a makeup artist, who is experienced in all areas of makeup artistry - Bridal, Print (flash photography) and Video (TV/Film). The Bride really is the star of her wedding, and her makeup should work for all the mediums she'll be in - pictures, video, in person, all of the above. It is well worth the investment to hire a Professional Makeup Artist who will make you look beautiful for this all important day. Just think about it - you spent lots of money on other aspects of your wedding, that will barely be seen or captured! You should invest in your face as well!

Katie Wooten inspired me. Her beautiful eyes reminded me of Anne Hathaway, so I sought to create a classic elegant bridal look for Katie, that would be reminiscent of Anne Hathaway's red carpet looks.

Katie is the manager of Apricot Lane Boutique, located in Birkdale Village in Huntersville. She is obviously no stranger to fashion, and her beauty shined in this photo shoot.

Her Bridal Portrait was taken by Erin L Hubbs, and decorated with a crisp elegant white background. Hairstylist Larry Webb of Salon Vivace Southpark created this one of a kind work of art hairdo. You may notice I work with Erin and Larry a lot, and I cannot say enough wonderful things about them, as they are very professional and so fun at the same time.

For Katie's makeup, we went with classic smokey eyes, accented with long lush lashes, and a nude lip. Airbrush foundation suited her skin perfectly.

I was blessed to work with the most beautiful bride, Dayna Motley. Dayna is not only beautiful on the outside, but such a happy person, and loves giving back to her community. She is a social worker, and never stops smiling and laughing.

Her Bridal Portrait was taken by Erin L Hubbs, and accented simply with a white background and white bench, which allowed Dayna to shine.

I worked with Dayna in advance to plan a makeup look she would love - we chose smokey eyes with deep blues, accented with a champagne highlight. Larry Webb of Salon Vivace Southpark created a classic and elegant style of curls with a section pulled back, accented with a feather facinator.

Ms. Jennifer Gamboa is absolutely beautiful. While I was getting her ready for her Bridal Portrait by Erin L Hubbs, we got to talking, and realized we went to the same high school! Jennifer came to America from Guatemala when she was 16, and learned English all on her own. She is now fluent in English and Spanish, and has the most beautiful accent.

Jennifer's gown was simplistic and elegant, and accented with a flower facinator. I designed her makeup to suit her lovely skintone and hair color, using colors of gold, burgandy, and soft black on her eyes, paired with a bronze glossy lip. Airbrush foundation suited her perfectly. Her gorgeous long hair was styled in loose wavy curls.

You can find one of Jennifer's photos from this portrait published in Hitched magazine, which premiered this month in the Lake Norman area of Charlotte.

All I can say is...WOW! Miss Tina Marie is just breathtakingly beautiful!

These photos were shot by the infinitely talented Erin L Hubbs of Greendoor Imaging. The set was simplistic - the white background and elegant crystal chandelier really directed the focus on our gorgeous subject, Tina Marie Stenseth.

Tina is exceptionally beautiful, as you can see. I enhanced her natural beauty with dramatic smokey eyes, and showcased her porcelain skin with airbrush foundation, a soft pink blush, and glossy neutral lips. Her hair was styled in classic curls pinned back, and accented with a feather facinator. This gorgeous look is modern, but also an incredibly classic look for brides.

I really have nothing else to write about this epic portrait - I believe the images speak volumes.

Bridal Beauty Timeline and Checklist

The Spring Wedding Season is upon us! My office is getting flooded with requests for Bridal Makeup Services, and I am so glad my brides are planning in advance! If you're recently engaged, or not sure when's a good time to start booking your beauty professionals, this timeline and checklist, adapted from teamwedding.com, will help you out!

12 to 6 Months Before

• If you’re thinking about getting artificial nails, make an appointment with a manicurist to try them out now. You have plenty of time to let your natural nails grow if you change your mind.

• If you don’t already have a hair stylist and/or makeup artist begin your search now. Many professionals book several months to a year out, so inquire about their availability early. If you're certain you've found "the one" for you, ask about reserving your date. You certainly don't want your favorite professionals to be unavailable for your wedding, so book early!

• Now is the time to experiment with haircuts and color, if you're planning on changing your style.

• Begin a hair care routine that includes weekly deep conditioning treatments and other vital treatments to improve the overall health of your hair.

• Consult a dermatologist if you have problems with acne, scars or other skin problems. It is also appropriate to discuss any facial or body hair you’d like removed.

• Invest in a skin care regimen suitable for your skin type.

• If it’s within your budget, indulge in a monthly facial.

• Begin a workout program if you don’t have one already. Regular exercise will improve your overall energy level, ease stress and boost your confidence. Another added benefit… it can enhance your skin’s glow.

• If you have light or bleached hair, limit or avoid contact with heavily chlorinated water.

• Eat healthy. If you want to lose weight for the wedding, do it in a healthful manner.

3 to 5 Months Before

• Book your makeup artist for the big day and schedule an appointment for your trial run closer to your wedding date. Trials are vital, so you can preview the “overall look.”

• Book your wedding day hair stylist and make an appointment to try out your wedding day hairstyle.

• Make an appointment to have your teeth cleaned the week before your wedding.

• Make any necessary changes to keep your workout program and weight loss regimen on track for the big day.

• Start drinking plenty of water — eight glasses (64 ounces) a day! Water helps flush the system and will aid weight loss, water retention and give you glowing skin. It’s great for the hair too.

• If it’s within your budget, start monthly manicures and pedicures.

• Have your hair trimmed every four to six weeks.

1 to 2 Months Before

• Have your trial with your makeup artist. Bring along photos of any looks you’ve found appealing in magazines or online, along with photos of your gown, veil, bridesmaids gowns, and anything you feel is relevant to your overall wedding style.

• Schedule a “Tress Rehearsal” with your hair stylist, complete with veil and headpiece to make sure they’ll work with your hairstyle.

• Treat your skin to moisturizers, body wash and body polish. Consider using both over-the-counter and prescription treatments for problem skin. Talk to your dermatologist if necessary.

• Have your last professional facial. Never have a facial or microderm abrasion right before the wedding.

2 Weeks Before

• Get your final trim, and touch up your hair color or highlights.

• Pamper yourself with a massage.

• Keep drinking plenty of water.

• Go to bed an hour earlier than usual every night.

1 Week Before

• Have your eyebrows shaped for the last time.

• Have your upper lip and bikini line waxed, if necessary.

• Take extra care to avoid the sun or apply sun block.

• If you’re doing your own hair and makeup, do a complete hairstyle and makeup run-through, complete with all makeup products and hair accessories (headpiece, veil and all).

• Confirm your makeup artist and hair stylist for the big day.

1 to 3 Days Before

• Get a manicure and pedicure, either from a professional or by yourself.

• Use a body wash to gently exfoliate or polish your skin, especially your décolletage and arms.

• Apply lots of moisturizer — everywhere.

• Take a nap.

• Drink two extra glasses of water.

• Make sure your emergency beauty kit is prepared. Stock it with essential cosmetics and other must-haves for your wedding day

Your Wedding Day

• Give yourself plenty of time to get ready.

• Relax by taking plenty of deep, cleansing breaths.

• Smile! Have Fun!

Hayden Olivia Bridal

This past Thursday evening, I was part of the cocktail event at Hayden Olivia Bridal boutique in Charlotte. Hayden Olivia is having a 3 day trunk show this weekend, featuring top designers such as Priscilla of Boston, and showcasing "hot off the runway" gown styles. To kick off their event, they invited several brides to attend a private shopping experience and meet their recommended vendors.

Along with me, there was a salon offering brow and skin servcices, a hairstylist, and Zoe Politis, who was spray tanning the brides. Critsey Rowe was taking photos of the event.

I was so honored to be a part of the event! I brought all my makeup supplies, including my airbrush makeup, and did makeup for about 15 brides that evening. They all enjoyed having the airbrush experience, as most of them had never had it done before. I was intrigued that these brides had taken notice of the cutting edge trends in Bridal Makeup, and were asking for those looks. I was happy to oblige.

Bridal magazines are showcasing a very understated makeup look this season, with soft shimmery eyes and soft pink or nude lips. The glamour is brought in with lashes and lip gloss, but the main focus is on perfect glowing skin. By airbrushing my brides, I was able to achieve this look.

Charlotte Style Magazine: What to Wear?

I was honored to once again work with Charlotte Style Magazine for their Fall Fashion issue! This issue featured local Media Celebrities Colleen Odegaard, Anjanette Flowers, Debra Kennedy, and Natalie Pasquarella. Each Media Celebrity was paired with a wardrobe stylist to answer the age-old question "What do I wear to..." The events these beautiful women were dressed for were events they actully attended on a regular basis: Fashion Show, Date Night, Special Occassion, and Charity Event.

The wardrobe stylists were Catherine Horgan of Closet of Style, Nicole Hale, Effie Loukas, and Linda Martinez. Each stylist worked with the Media Celebrity to come up with a look they would be comfortable wearing to their event.

Photos were taken at the Ritz-Carlton in uptown Charlotte by Erin L. Hubbs of Greendoor Imaging. Larry Webb of Salon Vivace Southpark created gorgeous hairstyles for each subject, and I created makeup looks to go compliment their outfits.

Oh Karolina!

I was honored to work with the gorgeous and multi-talented Karolina Von! Together with Erin L Hubbs of Greendoor Imaging and Catherine Horgan of Closet of Style, we created a Fun Fall Fashion Shoot!

I worked with Karolina once before on a shoot, and we stayed in touch due to a common thread - we both own bunnies! Yes, we are both crazy Bunny Mommies! After the shoot, I was even able to pet her bunny, KB - he was so cute! Karolina is very successful commericial and glamour model, laughs all the time, and speaks 4 additional languages!

Catherine brought the most gorgeous clothes and jewelry, all from local designers. She hand selected each piece to suit Karolina's small frame and accessorized it perfectly! She is definitely one of the top stylists in the Charlotte area.

For Karolina's makeup design, I wanted to showcase her gorgeous bone structure and eyes. I created a smokey eye using traditional shades of charcoal and black, but also used bronze and gold to compliment her skintone. Airbrush foundation made her look flawless. Apricot blush and champagne highlight perfected her Fall Beauty look.

Beautiful Bride: Gina Stallings-Ripley

I have been blessed to work with incredibly sweet brides this year. Gina was no exception. She contracted me about 6 months before her wedding date, to ensure my availability. We emailed extensively before meeting, and by the time we actually met, I felt like I was meeting one of my long-lost girlfriends.

Gina wore the most stunning and unique gown from Classic Bride and Formals in Davidson. The detail on the skirt and train was breathtaking. Her bridesmaids wore beautiful gowns in shades of purple.

Gina and I worked together to come up with a makeup plan for herself and her wedding party. She chose a smokey eye using shades of deep plum and champagne to go along with her bridesmaids dresses. Her attendants also recieved similar looks using shades of charcoal, plum, and mauve on their eyes. Neutral glossy lips topped off the perfect modern bridal look. Her mother, who prefered a very natural look, looked lovely in shades of ivory and light brown.

Gina's hair was styled by Malorie Tucker of the Light Studio Salon in Cornelius. Malorie is so talented, and I highly recommend her and all the stylists at her salon. She created a classic updo with small barrell curls in the back, which held all day.

Her wedding took place in September at the Penninsula Club, in Lake Norman. She had an outdoor ceremony overlooking the grounds, and a lovely indoor reception which was decorated with her colors of purple and green.

Judging from the photos, it looks like Gina and everyone involved enjoyed the wedding, and danced the night away!

I wish Gina and her new husband the best of luck, and I hope our paths cross again in the future!

Beautiful Katrina

Katriana Chief is an extrodinarily talented print and runway model. I've had the pleasure of working with her before, and although she is one of the sweetest people you'll ever meet, make no mistake - she is a force to be reckoned with. Watching her move can give you chills and bring tears to your eyes all at the same time. She is truly a work of art.

Katrina is based in NC and is signed with Whilimena agency in Charlotte, and is also signed in Atlanta and Miami. She'll be travelling to New York at the beginning of the new year to meet with more agencies and further her career.

For the photos below, Katrina wanted to showcase her beautiful skin and bone structure. I used airbrush foundation to perfect her flawless face, and shades of cinnamon and chocolate on her eyes.

Even though I know her career will skyrocket, and she'll one day grace the covers of Vogue and Vanity Fair, and walk the catwalks in New York and Milan, she will always remain kind, genuine, and humble. I hope to work with her more in the future.

Trash the Dress...a.k.a The Underwater Bride!!

When Caroline Graham approached Erin L. Hubbs about doing a Trash the Dress sesssion, I was super excited to be a part of it! Lots of brides take part in trashing the dress...some even look at is another form of commitment to their marriage - one dress for one man. You'll never wear it again, so why not put it on one last time and get some really fun and artistic photos with it?!

To make Caroline's Trash the Dress session a bit different, the photographer, Erin L. Hubbs, decided to use a water fountain near Uptown Charlotte at night. The nightime backdrop really gave the shoot a sense of elegance and seduction, and Caroline is definitely a sultry bride!

For her makeup, I knew she would be fully submerged in the fountain at several points in the shoot, so I took precautions to "waterproof" her makeup, including sealing in her foundation with airbrush makeup. She had a dramatic shimmery smokey eye and pink glossy lips. Her hair was styled in a half up-do for her formal photos, and taken down before she got in the water. The black magic roses were the perfect accessory.

After the photo shoot, which lasted about 45 minutes in the cold water, and having been submerged several times, and holding her face under the running fountain, Caroline emerged from the water with her makeup still intact! Nothing ran or streaked - even her lipgloss still shined!

Airbrush Makeup

I was recently honored to be privately tutored by the world famous makeup artist, Suzanne Patterson. To those in the know, Suzanne is about as skilled as a makeup artist can get. She is known for her work with the highest caliber HD technology and special effects. She currently is about to retire, and spends her time working with select HD clients, and the military for their combat casualty simulations.

Airbrush makeup is a micronized pigment, which is sprayed directly on the skin, much like spray tanning. The advantage to having airbrush foundation over traditional foundation, is that the coverage can be very sheer to completely opaque, and the micronized pigments lay evenly on the skin (great for those with scars, large pores, or fine lines). With traditional foundation application, on an HD monitor, the skin may look slightly streaked or a bit heavy. With airbrush foundation, the skin looks like beautiful perfect skin - not makeup. Airbrush makeup is very popular for brides, as it looks lovely and natural on video and in print, and it lasts all day. No really - all day, no matter what the conditions (wait for my post about my underwater bride!).

I took a 2 day privately taught course with Suzanne on HD makeup, specifically airbrush makeup, in Washington, DC. Her workshop is completely different than all the other airbrush courses offered - most are only a few hours long and are taught by the companies selling the airbrush equiptment. Those courses are basically "buy me" siminars where they teach about the different components of their brand of airbrush equiptment, and show you only the products their company sells.

Suzanne, however, teaches a heavy hands-on workshop. I learned all the ins and outs of the airbrush equiptment (several brands of guns, compressors, and parts) and got to try several different brands of airbrush makeup. She also spent hours on color and light theory and cosmetic chemistry. Being as how I barely made a C+ in high school chemistry, it was incredibly helpful to have someone show me first hand what ingredients can be mixed together, or thinned out. While I had read all about not mixing a silicone and a water based makeup, it was helpful to see first hand what happens if I were to do so (by the way, it basically turns to cottage cheese!).

At the end of the 2 day workshop, I felt prepared to choose the airbrush system that was right for my business needs. I did not feel at all pressured to buy one particular brand over another, but was able to look at all the different systems available to me. Did I want a large compressor, or a small portable one? Did I want a water-based makeup, or a silicone-based? What makeup colors were available in each line, and do they match well to actual skintones?

I chose to go with Graftobian's airbrush system, as I perform all my services on-location. The Graftobian compressor only weighs a few pounds, so it is easily portable to my client's choice of location. The airbrush makeup colors are formulated to exactly match skintones, from the most fair to the most dark, and come in all three undertones (warm, cool, and neutral). Most other foundations only come in two undertones - warm and cool, requiring the makeup artist to mix several colors together to achieve the correct match. With Graftobian's foundation, mixing won't be as necessary.

I've worked with my airbrush system on several photo shoots and brides, and everyone comments on how light the makeup feels, and how beautiful it looks on the skin. Most of my clients also say the cool mist application is very relaxing.

I'm very excited to be able to offer this high end service to my clients. I know they will appreciate the beautiful results as much as I do!

Beautiful Bride: Nicole Cohn-Fesel

Typically, I believe weddings are a private and intimate affair, so I don't usually share details of my brides' Big Day. However, I had to share this one!

Nicole is one of the sweetest people anyone will ever have the pleasure of meeting. She contacted me as a referral from another gorgeous and sweet bride I worked with last year, and I was so happy to work with her!

Nicole was married September 18, 2010 at Stowe Botanical Gardens, in the White Garden. She had always dreamed of having an outdoor garden wedding, and everyone around her was happy to see her enjoy her day.

Her wedding party colors were classic white and black, with accents of red. She chose the most lovely bridesmaids dress from White House Black Market, and accessorized it with a red flower belt - so elegant!

Everyone gathered at Nicole's house to get ready for the day. The Light Studio Salon sent 3 stylists, including the very talented Brandy Church and Malorie Tucker, to make sure everyone's hair was perfect and would withstand the activities of the day. Everyone's hair was beautiful and styled to show each bridesmaid's unique personality, but still looked cohesive as a group.

For makeup, Nicole and I worked out designs which would allow each girl to look slightly different, but still be part of her party (check out the face charts below!). Nicole chose to have gorgeous smokey eyes with shades of silver, charcoal, and black, and a pink lip and pink blush. I love a bride that isn't afraid of a little color on her cheeks, and Nicole definitely loved that "bridal glow!" Her bridesmaids all recieved smokey eyes, tailored to their features and skintone, with a glossy peach or pink lip. Nicole's mother looked lovely in earth toned shades on her eyes. Everyone loved their false lashes, that helped their eyes stand out, but didn't look too over the top.

I know Nicole and her new husband will have a wonderful marriage, and I wish them all the best in the future!!

Bridal Shoot at Vintage Motor Club

After two months of planning and coordinating with locations, vendors, and models...the day finally arrived! Much thanks to Erin L Hubbs for helping coordinate this amazing photo shoot!

The shoot took place at the Vintage Motor Club in Concord, NC. This is such a unique and amazing space for weddings and events - all themed around vintage cars!

Our model, the beautiful Katie Ellis of Wilhemena Evolution, looked stunning in an ivory silk ballgown adorned with crystals, courtesy of Classic Bride and Formals in Davidson - girls, if you have not visited this store, it is a must see! They have the most beautiful selection, and the service from Phaedra and all the girls at the store cannot be beat!

Katie's hair was styled by Brandy Church and Malorie Tucker from The Light Studio Salon in Cornelius. The style was a modern twist on the classic chignon style updo, which resulted in a beautiful editorial hair style, but still wears well for the beautiful bride.

Her beautiful feather facinator was hand created by Pretty Things by Grace, using white and beige feathers, and accented with silk orchids.

For Katie's makeup, I created a smokey eye using traditional shades of champagne, charcoal, and black, and of course, enhanced her beautiful eyes with false lashes. We balanced out her eyes with a gorgeous shade of rose lipstick, and a shiny gloss and peach blush completed the look.

Bite Me Cupcakes provided yummy props (which we all consumed after the shoot) which looked gorgeous, and also tasted delicious!

I was recently honored to work with The Light Factory museum at the Shoot Out and Shoot Out After Dark. Above are some behind the scenes pics, provided by Erin L Hubbs of Greendoor Imaging.

Our first husband and wife couple were a real treat. I was told ahead of time that she just wanted to "feel pretty." My main goal as a makeup artist - I was in heaven! I had a great time glamming her up, and even saw her the following day - with her lashes still on!

Our second couple will be getting married in a few weeks, and wanted a special engagement session. George Lanis of Catchlight Studio captured some amazing shots of them on the stairs of a beautiful uptown office building. They will treasure those photos for the rest of their lives.

Charlotte Style Magazine

Nationally Renowned Photographer, Erin L Hubbs, and I were recently chosen to work on the first print edition of Charlotte Style Magazine. The issue was based on the Top 25 most Stylish People in Charlotte, with the cover focusing on the Top 5.

Mike Minter was an obvious choice for this list. Not only is he an accomplished athlete (11 years with the Carolina Panthers) and an astute entrepreneur (owns several successful businesses under the corporate umbrella of The Minter Group) but his dedication to community service and giving back to those in need is his most impressive quality. Mike carries himself with effortless style and grace everyday.

Rachel Sutherland: It is evident that Rachel knows fashion. She has worked as a journalist for the past 14 years and is the former Style Editor the Charlotte Observer. In 2009 she launched Rachel Sutherland Communications, a boutique public relations firm. Her writing and styling work has appeared in numerous publications including Charlotte Magazine, SouthPark, LakeNorman and UCity magazines.

Brooke Gibson is the founder, owner and editor for www.waxmama.com, a local web portal that provides the women of charlotte with everything fabulous, fashionable and fantastic. Essentially it is Brooke’s job to be stylish, a position she does very well. Brooke has quickly become the city’s authority on “fabulousness,” who always gives readers the inside scoop.

T. Strong is the go-to resource for style advice for chic and fashionable women everywhere. From Red Carpet reporting to reviewing the hottest new fashion trends through her blog “Style Mayvin,” as a favorite stylists on Fox News Rising’s Wardrobe Wednesday, and as the host of “Speaking Fashionese,” T. Strong has the ability to interpret the fashion and style for every woman.

Jennifer France shows that giving back is always in style. A librarian at the Steele Creek Branch in Charlotte, Jennifer works with an outreach program to assist children and older adults studying English as a second language. One of her most rewarding projects for the library has been establishing a Fit Girls cohort in Charlotte. Fit Girls is a national fitness program for 4th and 5TH grade girls combining training for a 5k race with reading and community involvement.

The shoot took place at the Historic Dyestuff Building in Charlotte, NC. A reception was held to celebrate the unveiling of the magazine cover on April 17 at Ballantyne Resort and Lodge, and featured fashion shows by local boutiques.

I was honored to be chosen as one of the team members to work on this issue.

Beauty In the Woods

I was lucky enough to work with the most amazing and talented team - Erin L Hubbs Photography, Decor Designer Danielle Lotito, and gorgeous Model Carrie Smith. We called the shoot "Beauty in the Woods" and wanted to go for a spooky, Snow White sort of feel.

Carrie is absolutely stunning, and really glams up well! It was a lot of fun watching her get into character. I think some of my favorites moments from the shoot were watching Carrie check herself out in the mirror. I just love when women feel beautiful and happy with themselves, and Carrie really deserves it.

Danielle brought the beautiful set to life with an antique chair and mirror, and also caught video behind the scenes. Erin captured the shots perfectly, as usual.

These images will be ones to stay in my portfolio for years. Thank you to this wonderful team!

I Feel Pretty!

I was recently asked to pose as a subject for Erin L. Hubbs for her Dash of Light portrait series. Being a lover of all things vintage and glamourous, of course I jumped up and down at the opportunity!

Erin designed a set and built a custom crystal chandelier based on my personality. Having absolutely no modeling experience, I was a bit nervous about posing. It's completely different for me as a makeup artist to be the one in front of the camera! But you can't help but be comfortable around Erin. She put me at ease and helped guide me into poses that were flattering, but still natural, and she chose lighting and angles that complemented me.

I will treasure these photos for many years. Somehow Erin took pictures that were so personal and really captured who I was and what I love. I can't wait to hang these photos accross from my Bridal Portrait in my house, ready to show off to my guests. Thank you Erin for making me feel pretty!

Ever notice how in fashion magazines, the models look so bored and tired? Erin L. Hubbs of Greendoor Imaging and I decided to do our own version of this. Erica Moore Fink was the perfect model. I was so excited to work with such a beautiful girl in such beautiful surroundings. Laura Massie of Head Over Heels Event Planning was kind enough to lend us her fabulous house for the shoot, which was the ultimate backdrop to this beautiful, but exhausing themed shoot.

Old Hollywood Starlet - A Dash of Light

I was recently given the opportunity to work with the most talented photographer, Erin L. Hubbs of Greendoor Imaging, on a new project she's started - Dash of Light. Erin is getting back to her roots and coming home to the basics of simplicity and beautiful lighting, inspired by the great photographers from the 1930's and 40's. I've noticed in the most stunning portraits, the sets are simple, and the lighting is more natural.

With so much technology today, anything can be changed in a picture. The lighting, colors of outfits, makeup smudges, stray hairs - all of these things can be changed by computer programs, resulting in a completely different look than what you started with. In Hollywood’s Golden Age, however, photographers, makeup artists, and hair stylists did not have the luxury of photoshop – they had to take their time and get it right from the beginning. The team of professionals would choose a set, lighting and poses for their subject that would benefit and balance her features. This is what Erin and I set out to do with our shoot.

It was very refreshing to find a simple and elegant set for the models. It proves the point, that sometimes, all you need is to keep it simple - have a beautiful person on a beautiful set, with a team of professionals who take their time to get it right. I'm a perfectionist by nature, and I take too much pride to let someone sit in front of a camera without being perfect - not if I can fix it first! It was wonderful working with Erin, who had such a good eye for lighting and non-forced poses, and was able to bring out the best in our models (who happen to be real women!). We made a great team, and our work proved that if you do it right the first time, the organic end result is so much better than a strained, unnatural one.

Working with Lori, a talented Musician, and Molly, a Real Estate Broker, was so much fun. I loved watching them get into the character of an Old Hollywood Actress - the glamour really suited them both!

All people would benefit from the type of portraiture that Dash of Light provides. What better way to treat yourself in this economy than to transform into a glamorous and beautiful person, and have a glorious portrait of yourself on your wall - one that you will cherish for years to come.

Bridal Beauty: Should you hire a Professional?

I have to say, Wedding Season really inspires me! I absolutely love meeting new Brides, so in love and happy, and looking forward to their future with their new husbands! This season, I wanted to discuss how a bride should decide if she should hire a Makeup Artist for her Wedding Day.

Most of my brides hire me for one of three reasons:
1. She does not know all that much about makeup, and doesn't own a lot of makeup of her own. She's realized it will cost more money to buy quality products for her wedding day look (that she will never use again) than it would to hire a Professional.
2. She's good with makeup, and enjoys getting herself ready to go out. But...on her wedding day, she will be consumed about the last minute details, and does not want to bother with remembering which product to use where, and does not want to plan out extra time in her day to get out all her products, put them on (sometimes with nervous shaky hands!), and clean up before heading out to her wedding.
3. The best reason - The bride just wants to be pampered and relax on her Big Day!!

If you fall into one of these categories, please consider hiring a Professional Makeup Artist for your Wedding Day. Your Makeup Artist will come to your location, complete with makeup kit and a chair for you to sit in, apply your makeup with quality products that are proven to be long wearing and appropriate for photography, clean up, and go home. You may retain her services for your Bridal Party members, and even have her stay for touchups throughout your ceremony and reception.

Now, let's talk about the bottom line. Makeup Artists' rates vary depending on experience, products used, and the size of your Bridal Party. Contact a few for rates and availability, and be aware that some makeup artists book several months to a year out, particularly if your event is in the middle of Wedding Season! You may find that it is much less expensive to hire a Professional Makeup Artist than it is to buy your own products. When I got married, I spent around $250 on new high quality Primer, Foundation, Eye Shadows, Lipstick, and Lip Gloss, and this only encompassed about half the products I used to make my Wedding Day Look last all day! Now to me, this was an investment, as I knew I would wear these products again and again, and I find it very relaxing to apply my own makeup - it's how I unwind. However, I will say, that looking back on it now, I would have preferred to have a Makeup Artist and a Hair Stylist come to me and pamper me on my Big Day, allowing me to relax. I found it a bit stressful having to plan out travel times to the salon, how long it would take me to do my own makeup, how long it would take to get dressed, how long it would take to travel to the church, etc. It would have been much easier if all I had to do was wake up and have my "entourage" come to me!

I encourage all Brides to consider whether or not they should hire a Professional for their Big Day. You must take into consideration that your Wedding Day lasts a full 8-12 hours, and your makeup will need to hold up accordingly. After the day is over (and it goes by fast!), all you will have is your memories and your pictures - make sure you look your best in your photos by using only high quality cosmetics that are formulated for the purposes of flash photography and HD video, and will stay fresh all day.
Above all, enjoy your Wedding! It is the start of your new life as Husband and Wife!

Think Positive...an Introduction

Hello Everyone! I thought it fitting that my first blog would be an introduction. My name is Adrian Howe, and I am a Professional Makeup Artist in the Charlotte, NC region.

People ask me how I got interested in cosmetics, and I have hard time answering that question. To be honest, it's something I've always loved doing. All women should have those moments when she looks in the mirror and says, "Wow, I look good!" Yes, you know you've had those moments, and you should be proud of them! Too many women walk past a mirror and only see the bad things, and completely glaze over the unique qualities that make them beautiful! We as women need to learn that having confidence in yourself does not make you concieted! Embrace the fact that you have glowing skin, bright teeth, and shiny hair! Embrace the small freckles on your cheeks, the adorable cupid's bow of your mouth, the tiny lines around your eyes that crinkle when you're happy! They are what make you unique and lovely!

And so, this week, I put out a challenge to all women. Everytime you find something negative about yourself in the mirror, immediately say (out loud!) 3 things you like about yourself. Come on, it's not that hard. I'm sure you can find 3 things you like about the woman you see walking down the street, or 3 things you like about your best friend, or your sister. Why can't you find 3 things you like about yourself?! So for this week, I want you to focus on 3 positive aspects about your appearance, and ignore the negative.
It's time to start thinking positively, and see yourself for the beautiful, strong women you are!
